Managing Multiple Websites with Amazon Associates

After experiencing a few months of steady income from Amazon Associates on my Running blog, I started to add it to my other sites. There was a lot of hope that earnings would trickle in from multiple sources to make one strong stream. Well, I added it to a second site a while ago, but I made one BIG mistake.

What was the mistake? Simple - I created a second Amazon Associate ID. Would this work? Sure, but it isn’t ideal and frowned upon by Amazon.

Why isn’t it ideal? Well, Amazon Associates have a tiered referral rate. Meaning the more you sell, the higher the percentage you’ll receive from your sales. Here is the Referral Rate Tier Chart:

Referral Rate Tier Chart
Total Items Shipped
Referral Rates
(All Categories except Consumer Electronics)
1-6 4.00%
7-30 6.00%
31-110 6.50%
111-320 7.00%
321-630 7.50%
631-1570 8.00%
1571-3130 8.25%
3131+ 8.50%

As you can see depending on your sale volume, you can make between 4.0% and 8.5%. So what’s the problem with having multiple Amazon Associate IDs? Each ID will be treated separately, which means your sales from each website would determine a different tier for each website instead of the much more lucrative total sales from your websites determining the rate for all your sales.

Instead of having multiple ID’s, Amazon allows you, in fact encourages you, to create multiple Tracking IDs. You can use multiple ID’s in two ways. First, you can use it to keep unique statistics for separate websites. Another way to use multiple Tracking IDs is to create different ones for different locations on your website. For example, you could create one for banner ads and a separate one for main body ads. This would allow you to see which ad locations are working.

So, what does this mistake mean for me? Well, I just contacted Amazon requesting to have one of the ID’s deleted. Tonight, I’ll be up remaking my Amazon ads and replacing all the code. Wish me luck! Don’t make the same mistake I did. It’s a lot of work.
